What is WPC?
The WPC (Wireless Planning & Coordination) is the national broadcasting authority and is part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. It was founded in 1952 and has its headquarters in New Delhi, as well as other regional offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta and Guwahati.
The main tasks of the WPC are the issuing of amateur radio licenses and the allocation and monitoring of the frequency spectrum. Different departments within the WPC are responsible for

What approvals does WPC issue?
The approvals issued by WPC include
- Equipment Type Approval (ETA)
- Type Approval
- Experimental Approval
- Dealer and non-Dealer Possession Licenses (DPL and NDPL)
- Import Licenses for radio equipment.
For foreign producers, however, in most cases only the ETA is relevant. WPC certification is used abroad as a synonym for ETA.

How do I get the WPC license?
The WPC certification process is relatively simple compared to other certification types. There is only one registration, inspection and testing of the product, but these must be carried out by accredited testing laboratories. There is no factory inspection.
An issued WPC license is valid for the entire product lifetime. In case of a product modification a new license must be applied for.
Which products are covered by the WPC license?
WPC certification is mandatory for all wireless devices, such as WiFi, ZigBee, Bluetooth etc. in India. WPC required products can be found in the following categories:

Very important to note: Only frequencies on unlicensed bands are allowed. The frequency ranges must also never exceed the mentioned limits. Producers must therefore know in advance which exact frequencies they are allowed to use.
